Totally in love with Isla Mujeres
Totalmente enamorada de Isla Mujeres.. [+] Ver mas

Lyla Mitchell, from Minnesota, is an artist who fell in love with Isla Mujeres 20 years ago, and was interviewed this weekend at a new taco restaurant "El Torito", where her work is on permanent exhibition. Her colorful paintings include a Catrina, colorful birds, and fruits on a table. She also includes use of paper mache with her paintings.
She originally worked with a mentor in the US, and went to live in Florida, where her art included coastal landscapes, neighborhoods, and street scenes. She traveled in the Caribbean by boat, and came to Isla Mujeres 20 year ago, and living here up to nine months a year, as she does now.
El Torito opened a week ago on Allende street, ten meters (east) of the main street of Rueda Medina. There is a score of paintings on the wall available for purchase at a cost of 850 pesos for the smallest (5x7) up to 7500 pesos for those of medium size (28 x 20). This is their second gallery. Their first is in another commercial center downtown that opened relatively recently.
In El Torito, there are also two painting dedicated to three of his six sisters, who had cancer. Gratitude is expressed from the reporter to Ricardo Lopez Rivera, for assistance translating the interview. Together with Claudia Rosas Zavala, he adapted an abandoned space, converting it into a cultural area. Their goal was to create a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy typical Mexican dishes, made with traditional handmade tortillas.
Ms. Mitchell, 74, seems to have a lot of energy, and has painted some 800 works of art in her life. She joined in the adaptation of the space, at times, and enjoys being in contact with the people who visit the gallery. She has begun to master some words in Spanish, in order to be understood by those who don't speak English.
She studied at Northern Michigan University, after she attended St Croix Falls High School. Currently, she lives in Sarasota Florida, south of Tampa for three months of the year, and in Isla Mujeres for the other nine months.

Don't use flashlights or flash cameras near the nesting turtles
No usar linternas para ver el desove de tortugas [+] Ver mas
The turtles have begun nesting on the eastern beaches of Isla Mujeres, and staff and volunteers with the Tortugranja have been collecting and protecting the eggs. Volunteer Kai Creamer reminds visitors and residents to avoid scaring them by using lights near the beaches.
Ms. Creamer has been working with other volunteers on Saturdays cleaning the beaches were the turtles nest and invites more volunteers to assist.  (She works with Action for Isla, and the Plogging group that conducts clean ups around the island on Saturday mornings. LINK  LINK. )
She adds this advice for residents and visitors: Remember, during the nesting season: turn off the beach lights at night, because they frighten the turtles during nesting and confuse the newborn hatchlings on their way to the sea; Keep your dogs leashed on the beach because they can smell a nest a mile away, and for them it smells like a tasty appetizer.
Also Federal Zone concessionaires (and residents living along the Fed Zone) are asked to store furniture, beach beds and beach umbrellas at night, because they can be huge obstacles for nesting turtles and can cause injuries.
Remove any trash that you see on the beach and decrease your production of garbage in general, because plastic pollution in particular is a great threat to the survival of sea turtles and ingestion of plastics can lead to injury or death.
If you see a turtle on the beach: keep your distance and be silent, be respectful of this incredible moment. Do not touch, mount or otherwise annoy the turtles. And do not illuminate turtles with flashlights or take pictures using the flash.

Residents left the occupied property voluntarily and peacefully

May 19  Friday evening, about 80 anti-riot State Police officers arrived to the island, with a dozen patrol vehicles.  After a dialogue with police representatives, the residents who had 'invaded' an area of about 10,000 square meters left the property peacefully and voluntarily around 4am on Saturday. Before dawn, the area looked empty, where about 500 people had cut bushes and left trash behind.
It has been confirmed that a legal action was filed and investigation was opened in regard to the 'invasion', which implies a crime was being committed by everyone involved, and they were encouraged to leave voluntarily.  Representatives said that at first the majority began to leave who did not wish to be involved with a confrontation with the police, and then the most radical, the minority, were outnumbered by the police and also opted to leave.
The Head of the Mayor's office, Sebastian Escobedo, said that the position of the City is to stay on the sidelines. The disputed property is the responsibility of the state government, and  he was unaware of whether or not any individuals had filed a legal complaint in regard to the matter. He praised the conciliatory manner in which the problem ended, without violence.
At 7am, there were a dozen patrol trucks beside the road to Garrafon, in front of the 'invasion' area, and many officers were inside the premises. Others watched the entrances to prevent the return of anyone. The state police will continue to monitor it for an undetermined amount of time.
The police offered to consider a list of people who really need a property to live on, to give to the state government of Quintana Roo, via SEDUVI (Ministry of Urban Development and Housing), according to Luis Venegas, "Meneco". It is unclear exactly what was agreed upon for further progress on this issue, while the problem of families being overcrowded increases daily. There are still pending issues regarding  the Continental Zone where 200 hectares of  land were donated by the government for urban development by the first 1000 people, but there has been no progress in the eleven years since the donation.

Turtles begin mating and nesting in May. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen outside the facility. This is the dry season when farmers burn brush from their milpa-fields on the mainland, and salt was gathered at Salina Grande lake for hundreds of years, until the mid 1900's.
