Excellent results from the discount program for property taxes LINK
Thanks to the program of discounts on property tax payment for 2018, implemented by the City of Isla Mujeres in December, January and February, with discounts of 25, 15 and 10 percent, respectively, there were excellent results in their collection. For taxpayers with disabilities, pensioners or retirees, with INSEN or INAPAM credentials, there was a discount of 50 percent.  There was also a program for payment without intrest at 3, 6, and 9 months with participating cards.
The objective of this benefit was to support the economy of the citizenry, as well as encourage them to be current with their payments and to make them in a timely manner, because it is thanks to this contribution that the municipal government is able to carry out various programs and improve public services.
Wilfredo Avalos Cortez, director on Revenue, said that the response during this three month discount program was better than previous years, exceeding expectations. The Municipality of Isla Mujeres recognizes the dedication of all taxpayers to comply and be up to date with the payment of property tax, so it remains committed to using their contributions for the creation of public works, programs and improvements in public services for the benefit of all citizens

The FB page for the Department of Culture & Art posted: Monday at 9am there will be a Civic Ceremony commemorating the 501st anniversary of the first visit by Europeans to Isla Mujeres. It will be held at the Paso de la Tirguena on the Eastern Malecon (near the public bathrooms by the Town Square, behind the old hospital.). Pinned at the top of the Cultura page is the graphic about Sunday's special Noches Magicas presentation (See Events Section below).

Lobster fishing season closes with 63 cases of decompression among the fishermen  LINK
Personnel in charge of the Hyperbaric Chamber said that during the lobster harvesting season of 2017-2018, there have been 63 cases of fishermen with some type of decompression illness, as a consequence of poor management of the diving protocols.
Of the 63 fishermen who were treated in the capsule, two died, with one being from an Isla Mujeres cooperative and the other was from Holbox Island. In the final week of lobster season, no one was treated, but there were three cases the previous week.
It is noted that the number of cases increased this season, compared to the 2016-2017 season when there were only 48 cases, which is fifteen fewer cases than this year.. During the 2015-2016 year, the number of fishermen treated for decompression illness exceeded sixty, compared to this year's season, which is expected to close with sixty-three cases.
(Note: The lobster catching season begins July 1st and ends Feb. 28).

Lobster fishing ban in force

Most of this information has already been translated. It is noted that there is also a grouper ban in force, since the first of February, which ends on March 31st. The weather has allowed the fishermen to work, and the Navy forecast anticipates no major problems in the Yucatan Channel with the arrival of Cold Front #34, which is expected to reach the waters of Isla Mujeres on Saturday.

Seaweed removed promptly

.   The beach cleaning brigade of Isla Mujeres removes  hundreds of kilograms of sargassum daily, during this season when large amounts land on the entire coastline of Quintana Roo, according to the Director of ZOFEMAT,  Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone agency in Isla Mujeres.
The staff  begins at an early hour with their work of removing the seaweed that arrives mainly at Playa Centro, without neglecting the famous North Beach. There are some men who make holes a half meter deep, where the women who clean the beach deposit the seaweed, and it is immediately covered with sand.
Due to the geographical position of Isla Mujeres, the marine product doesn't tend to accumulate in a massive manner, which occurs in the Continental Zone of the municipality at Punta Sam and Isla Blanca. With the efforts of ZOFEMAT personnel, Isla Mujeres seeks to maintain international guidelines to ensure standards of quality in compliance with the Blue Flag and White Flag designations that have been awarded to these beaches.
This work will be continued throughout spring, but this destination isn't largely impacted by this phenomenon due to its geography and the strict commitment of the municipal government to maintain a good image of the isle. In addition, daily cleaning is part of the work that is done to maintain the Blue and White flag designations, as well as the Pueblo Magico status.
It is noted that Playa Centro has become very large with the accumulation of sand, which has also covered part of the nearby Navigation Channel. On the other hand, a rescue plan is needed to address the erosion that faces the area connecting Playa Centro and North Beach, such as replacing the geotubes, although some concessionaires have built old fashioned 'palizadas/palisades'.  (Structures made with wooden poles and sandbags, placed perpendicular to the beach).
