Photos by Bruce yesterday afternoon. Dancing broke out just up the street, at the entrance to colonia Salina Chica!! We were getting ready to go downtown & try to catch some dancing...and they came to us! (It's fun watching them go by on their way to gigs, too! They play their music as they travel, so you can hear them coming.)

Success start of Carnaval LINK
Isla Mujeres will be celebrating with this traditional event from February 9 to 13.
Visitors and islanders crowded the Town Square to watch the coronation of the Kings and Queens on Friday evening, for "Gala Night" of Carnaval Isla Mujeres 2018, whose theme is "Traditions of the Caribbean". On this first day of the festivities, Weyler Díaz Ricalde and Lucía Koyoc were crowned by the municipal authorities in an atmosphere of joy and excitement. The dance troupes of the Kings & Queens, in different categories, performed, and then the audience enjoyed the band "Mega Goom", and everyone started dancing to their Caribbean rhythms.
Every day, the festivities begin at 3:00 pm with Dj's music on the Rueda Medina Avenue, (at the Posada Beach) however, today, February 10, (yesterday) Cuban Night will take place on the Town Square, which will include a performance by the band "El Fresa y la Sentencia".
On the 11th, the traditional Carnaval Parade will take place, starting from the area by the Naval base at 4pm. There will also be a Children's Fantasy afternoon....see above for today's events. See Events section below.

Abundant tourism, but they aren't staying overnight

A few days ago, the small hotels announced their their occupancy rates are around 50 percent, and in order to attract customers, some of them are offering discounts of up to 20 percent. They are hoping that occupancy will improve with Carnaval, but they have doubts about this, based on previous years.
Many tourists are on a package trip, and after a few hours they board the boats to continue their tour to the National Marine Park, to enjoy the underwater attractions of Los Manchones, Cruz de la Bahia, MUSA, and El Farito, among others. By 2pm, nearly all of the 700 rental golf carts were rented. The capacity of 200 visitors to Isla Contoy is met or exceeded daily. Even before 11am, many tourists were visiting Garrafon, Punta Sur, and the Torturanja. Entire families could be seen using golf carts as the main means of transportation of visitors, but people also traveled in taxis.
In the midst of all this, there is discreet surveillance by the police, throughout the island. A similar number of tourist are expected on Sunday, when the weather is expected to be similar to Saturday's, with winds of a maximum of 20 kilometers.

Feb. 10 "During the celebration of the carnival in Isla Mujeres we are working to guarantee the safety of the islanders and each of the visitors," said an official of the police force, while requesting citizen collaboration so that these measures achieves their objective.
There will be special surveillance at the roads where groups of dancers, troupes and floats will cross. Also at the edges of the Town Square, and at Playa Centro, which are the main locations for Carnaval entertainment.
The tourist police patrol the main areas of greatest influx of visitors, in coordination with Civil Protection, to provide security to the beach sites while many tourist come to enjoy the long weekend and celebrations of Carnaval.
Vehicle and motorcycle patrols complete the surveillance work in the central and southern part of the island; as well as in Ciudad Mujeres, Punta Sam and Isla Blanca in the continental zone.
The lifeguards are on the lookout at Playa Norte and Playa Centro, as well as the dangerous Media Luna. They reported a very large number of visitors to the first two beaches, and that as of early afternoon, there were no problems.
They said the weather was good from an early hour and this is expected to continue throughout Carnaval.

Feb 10 One of the favorite sons of Isla Mujeres, José Eduviges Figueroa Paz, aka "Don Pepito", passed away of natural causes this morning, at nearly 85 years of age. He was a fisherman, boat carpenter, a marino in the Navy and a judge. He had seven children with Dona Maria de los Angeles Perez Miranda (RIP). He will always be remembered as a person who was happy and cheerful in his attitude and personal relationships.
Isla Mujeres historian, Fidel Villanueva Madrid, described him as "a man whose life was an example of work and love for his family." During the time when Mr. Villanueva was Mayor, in 1996-1999, "Don Pepito" served as judge, and continued that position in later years. Mr. Villanueva said, "He showed each person his great human quality and sense of what should be the application of justice between peers."
The family and friends are preparing for the funeral to give this good citizen and popular member of the community the farewell that he deserves. One of the family members shared their feelings, "He was always the pillar of the whole family, a man with a big heart, for me , personally, a great uncle, a great friend, but above all a great example to follow in the way to view life. Rest in peace, uncle Pepito."
He was born in Isla Mujeres on March 28, 1933 into a family of fishermen and founders of Isla Mujeres. He was the first of ten children of José Eduviges Figueroa and Mrs. Socorro Paz. His relatives say that since his childhood he dedicated himself to fishing, learning this respectable trade under the guidance of his father. He married Maria de los Angeles Perez Miranda (RIP), and they had seven children: Manuel Jesus (RIP), José Luis (RIP), Olivia Higinia, Miguel Angel, Julio César, Nidia Marina and Carla Georgina.
Economic necessity caused him to enlist in the Navy of Mexico where he began as a sailor and advanced. After he was married and had children, he went to study at the Naval School in Veracruz, where he specialized as a Radiographer.
He served for three decades in the Mexican Navy, which took him around the country, always accompanied by his family. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant de Fragata, and returned to Isla Mujeres to dedicate himself to fishing, together with his children, for almost 20 years.
He always enjoyed good health, until recently. He died at 84 years and 11 months. He is survived by a large family of brothers, nephews, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.May he rest in peace. Photo credit to Por Esto.

It is noted that as of Saturday afternoon, the troupes will be dancing, which will continue until Tuesday evening, and the Kings and Queens will be leading the activities, including the parades with floats and the nightly events on the Town Square. The Renatta dancers were scheduled to perform Saturday evening and it is noted that they are very talented.
There are dance troupes of all ages, children, young people, adults, seniors. "We are going to enjoy this festive atmosphere with dancing, which is a tradition," said one woman.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
