(Posted last evening) Today 11 islander couples said "I do" at the "Bodas Colectivas" (Collective Weddings) that were held at Punta Sur celebrating Valentine's Day. LINK Slide show video
The event was organized by the DIF social service agency, in coordination with the Civil Registry, and financed by the City.
During the City Council session today, the Council members approved the signing of the agreement for the City of Isla Mujeres to subscribe with FORTASEG, (Program of Strengthening for Security). This action ensures more resources to strengthen security in the municipality. LINK
This subsidy, which is granted to the municipalities and, where appropriate, to the states, is intended to provide federal budgetary resources in order to strengthen the performance of functions in matters of public safety, and thereby safeguard the rights and integrity of inhabitants and preserve public liberties, order and peace.
"During 2017, we received the support of the federal and state governments, which was reflected in the great work in security that took place throughout the municipality, both in the island and in the Continental Zone, keeping Isla Mujeres as the safest municipality in Quintana Roo," said Antonio Coronado Rojas, general secretary of the City Council.
As a result of this great work, for the year 2018, the municipality of Isla Mujeres has been chosen as a beneficiary of this subsidy, allocating federal resources in the amount of 10 million pesos, so, according to the rules of operation of the program , the City Council must provide a minimum amount of 2 million pesos, and adhere to the requirements in the agreement.

The fleet of the Ultramar company will be reinforced as of this Friday with the arrival of two new ferries, which (company representative) Germán Orozco has called the "Ferrari's of the sea".
The boats have a capacity of 270 passengers each, and are similar in design to the other Ultramar ferries, but with a touch of elegance and luxury. They have state of the are technology and are lower in height than the previous ferries, which gives them greater speed. Company manager Arturo Baez Vega said these two boats have come to reinforce the fleet that covers the route between Isla Mujeres and Gran Puerto in Puerto Juarez.
Both ferries were built in New Orleans, and are 28 foot long catamarans. He said they did not skimp on the details, elegance, and comfort for the passengers, noting, "It is about first class seats, as Isla Mujeres deserves." He added, "We have striven to raise the level of quality in each of our boats and that is why our boats are now better than the previous ones." He said these ferries have been designed to be more efficient in the consumption of fuel and the emission of pollutants, and that they could begin operations on Friday, if cleanup work is completed.
The manager explained that these new boats will replace the boats with which they started in 2004, when the passenger traffic was 1.5 million, and now, 14 years later, that number has increased significantly to 4.5 million passengers (Those statistics are 'passenger movements', meaning a round trip counts as two movements.)
A group of residents of the irregular Colonia La Guadalupana, clarified that they have never attacked Mrs. Darjee Monroy Villanueva, but they have simply asked for respect of the road accesses that exist in the colonia. LINK
They explained that for months, they have been working with a committee which is recognized by the municipal authorities, and with whom they have worked closely, on several problems that the colonia is goingthrough.
The neighbors explained that the version offered by Mrs. Monroy Villanueva is completely false, since when the wall was demolished, the minors were never disrespected.In addition, they explained that the Director of Public Security, Agustín Blanco, was present at all times, who can corroborate the facts.The group of neighbors insisted that there is no leader as such, there is a committee that is represented by seven people and that together decisions are made for the group.They recognize that there is a legal process that they are taking to be able to get their land legally, but it is a process that each of them is already seeing.In the meeting was also Manuel Chulín who rejected categorically that the accusations made by Mrs. Villanueva, but said it is the majority of the neighbors has made a decision.They assure that the land that she argues has always been street and that now she only seeks to seize it when her partner already has an adjoining one.

Catholic priest Raul Sanchez Alonso encouraged his parishioners to use the 40 days of Lent to become closer to Jesus Christ thru prayer, conversion, fasting, and the practice of charity. Preparations are underway for the Viacrucis event (Reenactment of the Stations of the Cross). He said the actors will make a five kilometer journey from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church to the Immaculate Conception Church, with a stop at the La Guadalupe chapel. In regard to conversion, there will be a spiritual retreat for husbands in a building is Sac Bajo. The scripture discussed on Friday was on the subject of fasting.

The community has a meeting planned at 6pm to discuss this dispute over access and lot #18, and other issues, as well as the progress that has been made toward regularization of their lots. In two months, it will be 13 years since the residents first occupied the more than 2 hectares of land in front of the Caribbean Sea.
The previous owner, Julio Prieto Posada, died in the second half of the 1970's and did not give the land to anyone to inherit, which cancelled the property title in his name with the Public Registry. It is recalled that more than 100 settlers occupied the property in early April of 2005, on the eve of a change of municipal government. They now have partial electricity, water, and trash collection services.
The National Electoral Institute has granted valid addresses to all of those living there, and a few days ago the municipal government ceded more than 300 square meters of land from the municipal cemetery adjoining the northern edge of the community, to provide a corridor for access, moving the cemetery fence into the cemetery about three meters. This gives access to the three streets of the colonia, but now a dispute has arisen concerning lot #18, of section three.

The door to the bathroom is damaged, and there is often litter in the neglected garden/landscape areas, as well as palm trees that haven't been replaced. Business owners want the municipal authorities to pay more attention and provide better maintenance to this area. There is also a section of the walkway that lacks lighting, at the southern end.

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
