Municipal government facilitates training for firefighters & Civil Protection personnel LINK VIDEO
"For the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, it is important that citizens have the certainty that in Isla Mujeres they are safe and have trained personnel to attend to any emergencies which present themselves ", said the City General Secretary, Antonio Coronado Rojas, on behalf of the mayor, at the ceremony for the presentation of certificates of participation.
The course was taught by instructors from the National School of Civil Protection, located in the state of Chiapas, and who trained the participants in four major topics: Prevention and Combating Urban Fires, Search and Rescue, Evacuation of Buildings and First Aid.
The Municipal Director of Civil Protection, Helman Ulises Berman Graniel, said participation in these courses increases the knowledge and skills of personnel responding to emergencies, to provide more efficient services to citizens and to safeguarding the safety of families whenever necessary.
He said, "The government headed by the Mayor has given us the necessary tools so that we can provide security and confidence for families in cases of disaster, accidents or other types of emergencies. These courses are important to keep us updated and to serve society better and and more effectively."

More than 500 motorcyclists are expected to attend the first Bikerfest Isla Mujeres 2017 LINK

The event is in conjunction with the Fifth Anniversary of the FZ Evolution group, which includes riders from various municipalties of the state and the region, who will meet at the Isla Mujeres airfield. The vehicle ferry has agreed to make sufficient crossings so no motorcycles are left in Punta Sam or vice versa. The first 200 riders will receive anniversary patches, and events include the quarter mile competitions, and shows including a stunt biker performance and Show Flame biker, as well as music by local DJs, the group BR Team, and other surprises. Members of Evolution FZ includes 20 islanders, who do altruistic work in he municipality, in addition to attending these types of events, in the five years since the founding of the group.
"El Chaparro" died in his sleep LINK
On Tuesday morning, the body of Daniel Guardado Moreno, aka "Chaparro", approximately 42 years old,was found lying on a lounger, having apparently died in his sleep, on the beach known as "Barrio", near Playa Centro, a fishermen's area where several others, already in their cups, also decided to spend the night. He was found around 7am, and the police and Red Cross arrived, but nothing could be done, since he had passed away several hours earlier. (Other articles note he was a vendor of coconuts).
According to some witnesses, he had apparently been suffering for several days from problems related to alcohol abuse, but had not sought medical attention. Some witnesses said he had been sleeping in the beach area for several days, but after last night his discomfort had worsened and he was vomiting and cold.
Relatives came to the location and identified the body.

See Por Esto According to the police report, an acquaintance of the deceased, Emmanuel Rivas Martínez, reported that the name of the deceased was Osvaldo Velázquez López, from Chiapas, and that he had met him about five months earlier and had given him a place to say for a few months since he had nowhere to sleep. He said, "Yesterday I saw him sitting in front of the room on Hidalgo drinking and I asked 'Are you getting drunk?' (le dije estas pisteando) and he replied 'yes'. He went to his room to rest but I was him again later. I went out again after taking a shower and he was not there, but later he came, and I told him not to go out, to stay in for the night, but he didn't listen to me. I went to sleep and didn't know anything until today when they woke me up." The roommate said he did not know the man's relatives, because he has only know him for a few months from working in the same place. It is noted that assistance was required from personnel of Civil Protection to free the body, which took just over an hour.
As a result of the cold front number nine that continues to affect the Mexican Caribbean, the port of Isla Mujeres remained closed for navigation by boats less than 40 feet throughout the weekend, which could continue until Wednesday. LINK
Karen Rosenberg: Fighting against diabetes in Isla Mujeres for 10 years LINK
The Diabetic Clinic and its volunteers assisted more than 350 islanders VIDEO
On Tuesday, Nov. 14, International Diabetes Day, a Diabetic Clinic was held where volunteers provided glucometers and reading glasses, as well as comprehensive care to about 350 islanders at the CRIM (Isla Mujeres Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center) facility in colonia La Gloria.
Karen Rosenberg organized this specialized clinic for the tenth time, as part of her ongoing battle against this devastating disease which is the leading cause of death in Mexico.
Geovanny de la O Avalos, president of the Diabetes organization, explained that care was provided for both patients and their families, and diabetics were given equipment and supplies, free of charge, and taught how to use it, to help control their disease. He said that one of the most important aspects is nutritional education, and for this reason it was provided by nutritionists, nurses, paramedics, and social workers.
He said "We will work more on prevention, because this is the leading cause of death in Mexico and it is a very degenerative disease, and very expensive. Although the technology has improved these days, it is still very expensive for a person who doesn't have the resources for this equipment."
At this clinic, 150 glucometers were given out, and a similar amount of reading glasses (and a similar number of patients who previously received glucometers were given new supplies).
The patients began gathering at 6am, and were attended to by a team of volunteers in coordination with the DIF social service agency and the director of CRIM, Dr. Xhanat Tze Mora. Another clinic will be held in the Continental Zone, for the first time, on Nov. 16, with assistance from the DIF.
The other article is from an interview done prior to the Diabetes Clinic, with Karen Rosenberg, founder of the Pro-Diabetic Patient Club A. C. organization, and Geovanny Avalos who is president. It notes that the clinic is being held for the first time at the CRIM facilities, providing this equipment for free to help island diabetics manage their disease better, and includes screening testing, nutritional education and advice, as well as distribution of glucometers, strips, and lancets. It notes that this is the tenth clinic, and that the DIF of Isla Mujeres is supporting it. It also reminds patients who have already received glucometers to return to receive new strips, and to bring the meters in if they aren't working to be exchanged or to receive new batteries.

Por Esto notes that this beach is also known as the Figueroa beach and that the deceased had previously drank alcohol almost daily, but had taken a break for several months, however his body was already apparently damaged by many excesses. Por esto says he was approximately 35 years old, and made his living by selling coconuts to tourists, which he did regularly, and at the end of the day he would meet with his friend at "el Barrio" beach, although he no longer consumed alcohol. It was these companions who discovered his body, on the beach lounger where he had laid down hours earlier. They noticed his death at 7am when he didn't move and was quite cold, so they called the Red Cross,and the paramedics arrived, but he had no vital signs.
According to his friends, the “escuadrón de la muerte” (the name of a group of alcoholics, which presumably has to do with their relatively short lifespans) don't usually seek medical attention and never go to the Community Hospital, considering it a waste of time.
Witnesses said that Daniel GR had spent several days sleeping in the beach area despite having a home to stay at overnight and during the night of Monday and part of the early hours of Tuesday, he felt bad, with vomiting, many chills and malaise, but they never imagined that his condition was so serious that his life end abruptly. His body was taken to Cancun for autopsy after being identified by his family.
Councilman remains concerned about lack of urban transportation

Councilman for the MORENA party, Roberto Martinez Aragon continues to insist that islanders need a system of urban transport so they are not at the mercy of the taxi drivers, who give preference to tourists. He said he presented a petition to the Mayor on Nov. 14 requesting urgent resolution of this issue. He says he has repeatedly asked the City Council to address this problem, and considers urban transportation to be a right of the citizens. He has also proposed that DIF buses be used to transport students, which was not accepted.

Security measures are being implemented in all four churches due to thefts from their collection boxes, with plans to install video cameras to identify those responsible and to work with the police to stop this activity. Father Raul Sanchez Alonso said they have unfortunately been forced to close the churches from 2p to 5p and after 8:30pm. On Sunday, when explaining this to the parishioners, he said they were doing this "with great sorrow, but out of necessity."
It has been the custom to leave the doors of these buildings open, so that visitors and believers can enter to entrust themselves to the Almighty and continue along their spiritual path, therefore many of them are charitable and deposit money to be used later towards the multiple activities of the parish.
As a result of these thefts, more than one person has volunteered to pay for the installation of these video cameras immediately, so that once this is done, the custom of keeping the doors open will resume. This should happen before the holidays for Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, on November 28, according to the first estimates of some members of the Parish Council.
These "visits" by thieves had previously occurred to the churches in the past, but it was sporadic, now it seems that they try to visit each property frequently to empty them of donations.
This announcement by Father Raul Alonso caused concern and regrets to more than one parisioner, and they said that the municipal authority should implement a plan to increase the police surveillance so that these places of spiritual meeting are protected, as well as the prevention of more robberies in homes and other tourist sites of Isla Mujeres to regain confidence.

On Monday, a 23 year old man man named Oswaldo, apparently intoxicated, died immediately when he fell several meters from a roof and was impaled on exposed rods. The property was cordoned off by police, which is located on Juarez Avenue near the "Andres Quintana Roo" primary school and belongs to the Fernandez Loria family.
It was clarified on social media that the young man didn't live there, but that there were young people who frequently "jumped roofs" in that area. A member of the Geisler family wrote, "What an unfortunate event, (...) it frightened my mother. May he rest in peace. (...) This is not where the young man lived; there are people who are always jumping roofs here. Thank you to everyone who was concerned and cared about our family. Blessings to all."
The young man, who was originally from Chiapas, doesn't have family on the island, so his friends and acquaintances were located, who said that he was called "“Sandía”, and often drank alcohol with his friends. A gents with the Ministerial office were working at finding more information in order to notify his family, and his body was freed and taken to Cancun for autopsy.

Hanal Pixan means "Food for the Souls" in Mayan.
