Isla Mujeres is the ancestral land of giant sea turtles, who lay their eggs in the soft sands of our coasts between the months of May and September.  If you are visiting our beaches during nesting season, please follow these simple instructions to help take care of them
TurtleTips...You too can be a friend of the sea turtles. When you encounter them on our beaches, follow these rules:  Stay away from them. Let them pass. Watch where you walk. Don't litter. Be careful of the hatchlings.

We are increasing efforts to protect and care for sea turtles 馃悽 ensuring they are safe in Isla Mujeres during this nesting season.https://goo.gl/zyUGqQ

The City is committed to the protection of protected species
Aug 9       Due to the discovery of a sea turtle with serious injuries on the coast of the island, the City of Isla Mujeres, headed by municipal president Juan Carrillo Soberanis, reiterated its commitment to the preservation of this species, and announced a series of measures to increase surveillance in coastal nesting areas this season.
At 7:30am a turtle of the Green species (Blanca in Spanish) was found on the beach across from the airfield building, who died of her injuries moments later. The director of the municipal Department of Environment and Ecology, Carlos Barranco Garc铆a, explained that personnel from his agency responded to the report and found the turtle has suffered blows to her head and cuts in a fin, so they called biologist Deline Garc铆a Canto, director of the Tortugranja, to participate in the rescue. The turtle was in critical condition, so they could not release it and decided to transfer it to the facilities of the Tortugranja, but unfortunately it died on the way there.
Mr. Barranco Garcia said the City has already begun investigating to find out who is responsible for this, and appropriate procedures will be taken, involving PROFEPA (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection). He said, "In Isla Mujeres, we encourage the care and preservation of flora and fauna, so we reproach every act against it, and this action is a serious crime against one of the protected species which comes to the island year after year during nesting season."
The official reaffirmed the commitment of the municipal government to protect sea turtles. Therefore, in coordination with the federal and state governments and with the support of the Department of the Navy (SEMAR), they will increase the monitoring efforts, in order to avoid any repetition of this type of activity in Isla Mujeres.          In addition, an invitation was issued to the community in general, for those interested in participating as volunteers for the tasks associated with turtle conservation, to go to the Tortugranja facility.

The turtle that was found still alive by the Caribbean Sea area this morning died as a result of blows to the head! Unfortunately there are no detainees

A turtle of the Green species was beaten to death by unknown persons, who abandoned the animal out of fear of being discovered. The turtle was found alive but died a few minutes later due to blows she had received to her head. Deline Garc铆a Canto, director of the turtle protection program, confirmed that the animal was killed around 7am when she had intended to lay eggs on the beach. The incident occurred behind the former Cablemas office, by the Caribbean Sea, but when the authorities arrived, they didn't find those who were guilty of this terrible crime.
Authorities are urging residents to denounce this type of incident, and asked the inhabitants of Isla Mujeres to participate in the surveillance that takes place for the protection of turtles. Anyone who saw something is asked to come forward. City personnel were alerted while the animal was in agony, but it died within minutes.
A report was made and the remains of the animal were buried inside the facilities of the Tortugranja, and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection was notified. (Profepa).

Hotel occupancy in Isla Mujeres remains at 70 percent: Castillo Maga帽a https://goo.gl/nmBJzU
Unlike other tourist destinations in Quintana Roo which were more affected by  Tropical Storm "Franklin", Isla Mujeres had no problems, according to Jesus Castillo Maga帽a, director of Tourism for the municipality.  He said that fortunately, the storm did not directly hit the municipality and therefore did not have much effect,  as happened to the southern part of the state of Quintana Roo.
He said that fortunately, in this area, only a few scattered rain events were recorded, but nothing to worry about. He said commercial activity is operating normally now and no cancellations were recorded. He said hotel occupancy remains at 70 percent. He noted that storms are unpredictable and it is always best to be prepared, and that Isla Mujeres remains prepared for storms and hurricanes during this season.

The Aguakan automatic payment machine will be operational in upcoming days, which will be especially convenient for making payments on the weekends.

Authorities seek to solve the wave of boat and motor robberies in Isla Mujeres  https://goo.gl/o82PT3
Authorities in Isla Mujeres continue to track a network of thieves. There have been thefts affecting six boats in the past 15 days.  Just last week two boats were stolen and removed from their anchorage in front of the monument to the whale shark. In both cases, thieves took the 'colas' or transmissions from the engines, whose damages cost the owners more than 20,000 pesos.
Many of the motors are old and sometimes the owners no longer have invoices, which complicates trying to file a complaint with authorities. For those who have documentation, the situation is also complicated by the fact that a transmission is difficult to identify, which significantly reduces the chances of recovering them.
One boat that was stolen on Tuesday was recovered in the area of el Meco (a ruin on the mainland, near Punta Sam), but it had a different motor, and not the same 'cola'.

Tourism returns
De regreso est谩 el turismo. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Economic activity increased in Isla Mujeres after nautical restrictions were lifted and the tourism boats from Cancun were bringing many people over to shop, enjoy the beaches, and tour the island. The ferries were also busier. The effects of Tropical Storm Franklin decreased economic activity considerably for two days. On Wednesday, boats were allowed to be active in the Bay, and it is expected that the tours will resume on Thursday to the whale shark area, Isla Contoy, the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks and other underwater attractions.

Turtle killed when she came ashore to nest
Matan tortuga luego desovar [+] Ver masFull article at this link

This article notes that 'three ruffians' killed a sea turtle Wednesday morning, who were unable to remove it because they were discovered by residents, and then personnel with the Ecology Department arrived to determine the facts and begin the investigation. However, since the turtle was still alive, the immediately transported it to the Tortugranja to try and save her, but she died moments later. It was a Green turtle of about 200 kilograms which had come ashore to lay eggs in the area across from the cable company offices, near the airfield.
It appeared that the turtle butchers ('ecocides') had hit her in the head and had begun to remove the flesh when they were discovered and escaped. Residents request the police to try and find out who was responsible for this incident which occurred around 8am.
Isla Mujeres has protected turtles for more than half a century, since Don Gonzalo Chable began to protect the eggs in the area that is now the Tortugranja, which became an institution two decades ago, to continue rescuing the eggs that are deposited by the turtles on the eastern beaches of the island.
There are usually over 1000 nests rescued during each nesting season by municipal staff and volunteers, however, there are also people who sell turtle meat and act in secret late at night and during the early predawn hours.  Turtles are federally protected and consumption has decreased, because the younger people of the next generation are opposed to it, according to the islanders who were born here.

Storm drain deficiencies after storm

Although the rain from Tropical Storm Franklin were not as intense in Isla Mujeres as initially expected there were puddles in some of the main streets downtown, which indicates there a problems with the storm drain system downtown. There were no major problems in the colonias during the rains, and no apparent flooding afterwards. The levels of the salina lakes did not rise significantly, and there are pumps which can be operated when necessary during the rainy season to lower their levels.

Historic dock will be a restaurant
Muelle hist贸rico ser谩 comedero [+] Ver masFull article at this link
It had been proposed by the Port Authority that a museum be installed on the historic downtown dock, which was previously used by the Magana ferry, 'that operated for a century', however the pier has been leased to a food business, according to employees involved with its operation.
Improvements and renovations are being done to the dock, and it appears there will be a food preparation area, a seating area, and probably a palapa. It is unknown how much the entire area of ~200 meters will cost, but it is estimated that it will be several thousand dollars per month, like the commercial spaces in the current Maritime Terminal.
The wooden pier was used for the arrival of thousands of tourists in high season in the 1960's, when tourism began on a grand scale, during the opening of the first hotel "Zazil-h谩" in 1964.  This is where the executives arrived who planned the megaproject that is now Cancun, the most important tourist destination in the Mexican Caribbean. However, the pier is said to have been in use since before the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), and in fact, since the founding of the town of Dolores in 1850.
