The "Reto Isla to Isla" open water swimming competition will take place on Saturday, July 15 across the 7 kilometers between the island and the mainland, departing from the restaurant "Flamingos" located along the road to Punta Sam at 7:30am. They are expected to reach Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres around 11am. This is the third year this event has been held. Last year there were 157 swimmers and about 200 are expected this year, including participants from Canada, Argentina, and the United States.

During a meeting with the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, the mayor of Isla Mujeres, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, proposed the application for financing in the amount of  200 million pesos to strengthen crime prevention in insular municipalities of Mexico. He said, "As a representative of the island municipalities of the National Federation of Municipalities in Mexico (FENAMM), and as municipal president of Isla Mujeres, I propose the creation of a fund,  through the SHCP, allocate resources that guarantee safety of all islanders. "
The mayor commented that in Mexico there are more than 80 inhabited islands, however, less than 10 have an economic dynamism that requires the authorities to provide resources to strengthen their infrastructure, training and technology in the field of security.

It is noted that there are now 11 municipalities in the state of Quintana Roo, but the state anthem has a stanza which is outdated and says there are seven. The author said that while it is feasible to make a change, it is not urgent since that stanza is no longer included when the hymn is sung in public.

Two individuals, JPB 34, from Agentina, and DMH, 34 from Guadalajara, Jalisco, were arrested by the municipal police on Monday July 10th around 7pm for allegedly smoking marijuana near "Chimbos" restaurant on Playa Norte. Municipal police officers noticed the men acting nervous when they approached, and did a routine inspection, finding a cigarette of dry grass with the characteristics of marijuana, which had been quickly extinguished.
(This second news brief is titled "Le quemaban las patas… pero no a Cuauhtémoc" which literally means..."They burned their feet....but no to Cuauhtémoc", who was the Aztec ruler who surrendered to Cortes, and was tortured by having his feet burned, in an attempt to make him divulge the location of more treasure. I don't know what it means.)
