Taxi drivers say some visitors to the Tortugranja are disappointed by the lack of things to see at the aquarium part of the exhibit, which previously had a knowledgeable guide and included turtles, seahorses, lobsters, shrimp, and other species. They said people often leave angry about having made a payment and not having seen any tourist attractions, except some turtles in the pools, and the incubation pen with the small signs explaining the number of eggs and the date and location where they were gathered.

On this date in 1928 General Alvaro Obregón passed away, victorious revolutionary military leader, President of the Republic from 1920 to 1924, and President elect in 1928.
The three levels of government are working together to redouble efforts to monitor nesting sites and prevent predation of eggs or turtles
Authorities of the three levels of government held a meeting titled "Strategy of Action for the Protection of the Turtle" as part of the commitments assumed by the administration of Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis for the care of the environment, and especially for the preservation of this species which is in danger of extinction.
Antonio Coronado Rojas, general secretary of the city council of Isla Mujeres, representing the Mayor, said that this locality receives thousands of tourists each year and also "very special visitors", such as the extraordinary sea turtles who arrives each nesting season (from mid-May to September).He said, "Unfortunately for this species survival has not been easy, since the sale of their meat and eggs is an activity that is still carried out, illegally. Therefore, comprehensive surveillance is of paramount importance to protect the lives of these animals."
He said the municipality of Isla Mujeres has a commitment to care for each of the nests, offspring and adult turtles that come to its shores, so it is necessary to strengthen the surveillance strategy in Coordination with the three levels of government, protective associations and civil society.
"The best protection strategy of the Sea Turtle is the one in which we all participate, so in the name of the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, I extend a wide invitation to all the islanders to join us with this surveillance work, day and night, to protect the turtles from natural predators and from theft of eggs or turtles by people,"he concluded.
Names of officials participating in the meeting are given, who include representatives from the municipal departments of Ecology, Civil Protection and Firefighters, the Navy, and PROFEPA (Attorney for Environmental Protection).

Managers at HSBC bank confirmed that dozens of card users have had cloning of their data and theft of money from their accounts. Early theories are that cyber-criminals didn't remove the money via HSBC ATM's with a ready device, but rather at the readers of local convenience stores, since some clients shopped at them on Friday thru Sunday. The removal of the money was done outside of the country. However use of the ATM has not been ruled out.
If this is true, then this would be the second time this has happened, because some years ago Colombians (sic Bulgarians) did this type of theft and were put behind bars.
Other card holders were also affected by the alleged automatic locking by the bank when the irregularities were detected, and as a preventive measure they will be renewing hundreds of cards on Monday so that users have access to their money while the investigation is taking place.
According to the modus operandi of these criminal groups, it is suspected that Friday they would have activated their remote reading devices or at the ATMs on Friday, with the intention of collecting information from the cards and emptying them on Sunday. The bank pledged to reimburse the amounts to the clients that were subtracted from the different accounts, after a long process of investigation.
Several HSBC clients had amounts withdrawn ranging from 4800 pesos to 12,000 pesos, especially the municipal workers and teachers who received their two week salaries last weekend. The bank staff responded to the affected clients saying that the bank did detect suspicious activity during the weekend, which is why they blocked many cards.

It has not been ruled out that cards of tourists were cloned, but as of 3pm on Monday, no cases had been reported to the Tourism Department, according to its director Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco. July 17 There were a normal amount of tourists with about 60 boats transporting them to the island to enjoy recreation in the water. Swimmers were at North Beach and Playa Centro before 10am, and personnel were ready to provide security for nearly 10,000 visitors who arrived.
Traffic was busy with about 700 golf carts in use, which are a major source of recreation on land, with congestion at several points, but it was much less of a problem than on Sunday. Commercial activities were at about 40% and fishing catches were at about 30%, according to information obtained.
The weather forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday is good with some clouds.

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. July 15, Saturday The "Reto Isla to Isla" open water swimming competition will take place departing from the restaurant "Flamingos" located along the road to Punta Sam at 7:30am. They are expected to reach Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres around 11am. There are 7km and 3.5 kilometer categories, and the minimum age is 18, with divisions every ten years.
