https://goo.gl/goCoJv
The 10th Whale Shark Festival continued to be a success, with participation and attendance by both tourists and islanders. On Saturday afternoon there was an informative presentation in the City Council room of the Town Hall, and later there was a  projection of a series of short films at the Town Square. The City Government, headed by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, supports the care and preservation of whale sharks and this festival is a way to raise awareness in an entertaining and educational manner, with support from activists and entrepreneurs locally and internationally.

This isn't local news but if/when it goes into effect, it will affect Isla visitors...

Add $20pp to your vacation budget: New tax proposed
State officials announced a proposed $20 dollar tax on each foreign tourist arriving by air, with plans for a pilot program in Quintana Roo to assess its feasibility. This information was confirmed during the opening ceremonies of the 2017 summer holiday season by the State Secretaries of Tourism, Marisol Vanegas, and of the Environment, Alfredo Arellano, as well as the Coordinator of the Cabinet of the Government of Quintana Roo, Rocío Moreno Mendoza.
The tax was originally proposed as an initiative to finance security in the main Mexican tourist destinations, but Quintana Roo requested the inclusion of coastal management. The state says recovery and maintenance of its beaches will cost 2 billion pesos.
Mr. Moreno Mendoza said that the proposal to collect the new tax to be used for tourism infrastructure was conceived by the National Tourism Business Council (CNET) and was taken over by the Federal Secretary of Tourism, who has proposed that Quintana Roo be the first state where the tax is imposed, as a pilot program, to measure its feasibility for application at a national level.
For almost four years, the hotel industry in Quintana Roo has repeatedly requested a new beach recovery plan for the coastal areas of Cancun and Riviera Maya, since beaches rescued with public and private resources in 2009 have begun to erode from not receiving the maintenance that was foreseen in the original plans.
Mr. Arellano Guillermo explained that the proposed new tax is only one of the sources of financing that are being considered for the rescue of beaches at the state level, since they also intend to use funds from ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime Coastal Zone), as well as resources from public-private partnerships.
The Trust for Security, Social Development, and General Management of the Coastal Zone will include the three levels of government, the academic sector, civil society and private individuals, and will be presided over by the state government

Ultramar started using its biggest boat with a capacity for 800 passengers, which arrived from Cozumel before noon for its first trip. The company has a fleet of 8 boats to transfer passengers to and from Isla Mujeres. There are two boats from Punta Sam, which bring passengers and cargo, who will increase their number of crossings with the demand requires it.
There were no problems reported at the beaches, and it is requested that boats do not tie onto the buoy line. Workers at the golf cart rental agencies are asking renters to drive carefully and not put the safety of others at risk. It is noted that during each holiday period there are a dozen or so accidents involving golf carts, usually with minor injuries, but also some with serious fractures.

Fifth swarm of bees destroyed

This is the fifth swarm of bees destroyed this month and one of more than twenty so far this year, according to one of the workers with the municipal Civil Protection Department, who were called to the Posada del Mar hotel downtown. A swarm that was estimated to be about three kilos of bees landed on a branch near the pool, and the agency was immediately called. Armin Tuz, with Civil Protection, said this has been happening frequently this summer, and they are asked for assistance by individuals and businesses to avoid stings.
Africanized bee can be dangerous, especially for children, because of the level of aggressiveness they present when they are disturbed by noises and odors. It is said that a small dog was killed by a swarm in the door of a home in colonia La Gloria last year.
There are concerns that a tourist could be stung when they are touring the areas of Sac Bajo, Punta Sur, or the beaches near the forested, jungle areas. It is not known why there are more bees on the island or why they would be arriving from the Continental Zone, but there are concerns about the possible effect on tourism, and it is advised not to disturb them and to call Civil Protection.
