On Wednesday, Aguakan will be doing maintenance on a 32 inch line, which could affect service in parts of Cancun and Isla Mujeres during the day, causing low pressure or interruptions of service. In addition to possibly affecting the island, it could affect parts of the municipality on the island including Punta Sam Condominiums and Playa Mujeres.
It should be remembered that after the completion of the works, there is usually low pressure in the corresponding areas due to the wide distance that the water must travel to the urban area and the pressure required to make it reach all the houses.

Municipal Hurricane Operations Committee 2017 sworn in
The City of Isla Mujeres, headed by the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, through the Municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department, installed the Hurricane Operational Committee 2017.The director of the department, Helman Ulises Berman Graniel, said that the objective of the committee is to carry out actions for the prevention and protection of the island's residents and their property.
Mr. Berman said, "For the City of Isla Mujeres it is vital to safeguard the integrity of islanders and visitors during the rain and hurricane season, from June 1 through November, with coordinated actions that ensure their safety and mitigate any possible contingency."
These actions are carried out in a coordinated manner with the state government. Names of the participating officials and agencies are given including the Red Cross, CFE (Federal Electrical Commission), DIF social service agency, Aguakan, the Port Authority (APIQRoo), Health Department, Police Department, Army, Navy, and Civil Protection.

Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis reaffirmed his interest in continuing to manage resources to provide improved public spaces to the inhabitants of the municipality."Public spaces contribute to the identity and character of the island because that is where families gather to spend quality time together and where our children and young people practice their favorite sports. They are not only for fun, they are essential for the development of our society, " said the Mayor.
The mayor spoke about the importance of supporting sports among citizens, remembering that in Quintana Roo there a high prevalence of obesity and being overweight, which is why the City of Isla Mujeres is working to promote physical activity among all the inhabitants of the municipality.
He said, "Most of the islanders practice some sport from a young age, it is part of our culture, so this administration understands the importance of having recreational and sports spaces of quality, that are well equipped so that our children can continue with their athletic development. "
Since the beginning of the current administration, there has been ongoing recovery of parks and recreation areas, such as the "Las Tortugas" and "Las Hormiguitas Obreras" parks, the palapa of the "Las Iguanas" park, the delivery of an outdoor gymnasium and the recent rehabilitation of the emblematic "José del Carmen Pastrana" basketball court.
The Mayor said that fulfilling commitments to the citizenry of Isla Mujeres is a priority for his administration and for this reason, his government will continue working with the federal and state governments so that the island families obtain great benefits and improve their quality of life.
Mayor supports whale shark licensees
In a show of support for the whale shark licensees, the Mayor accompanied them during a meeting with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), concerning their requests for permits for whale shark tours. The licensees were very enthusiastic about the mayor's assistance, commenting that they had never had the backing of a municipal government despite this being one of the strongest economic activities in Isla Mujeres.
The Mayor said, "For me, it is very important to help islanders keep their jobs, and I know that one of the strongest economic activities during this season is the whale shark tours, so I will give all my support to the permit holders."
The mayor thanked the Director of CONANP for attending to the requests of the licensees to carry out the sighting and swimming activities with the whale shark, because it ensures that the permit holders understand the importance of the care of the species and participate in their conservation.

Asking for increased actions against mosquitoes

Now with the rainy season, residents are requesting that efforts by the Vectors Department be increased to fumigate against mosquitoes, which have increased, especially in the neighborhoods near the lagoons. Dr. Miguel Ángel García Albarran, Director of the Community Hospital, said islanders have concerns about mosquitoes carrying diseases such as dengue, chinkungunya, malaria and zika. He said it is important for residents to remove junk from their yards and any items where mosquitoes can breed. He noted that fumigation only kills the mosquitoes and not the larvae.

This morning Francisco Ricardo Gómez Lozano, regional director of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) for the Yucatan and Mexican Caribbean, met with the majority of the affected whale shark tour providers of Isla Mujeres who requested a response to their requests for their permits, whose applications were filed in April.
It is nearly a month since the start of the season and many of the permits have not arrived, which has provoked anger among those affected.
The meeting was attended today by the Municipal President of Isla Mujeres, Juan Carrillo Soberanis who sought to mediate on the issue, seeking to resolve the conflict and show his support for the nautical community of Isla Mujeres. About 70 tour operators attended the meeting in Cancun at the CONANP office.
Mr. Gómez Lozano said they will conduct a file by file review and have a final decision on June 15 at the latest. However, this promise does not seem to reassure most of those affected who still have not received their permits, and now face another nine days of uncertainty.

In the entire municipality of Isla Mujeres, including the island and the mainland areas, there are more than 6700 private and public service vehicles registered, and nearly 70% have renewed their license plates. However, the plates arrive at the office in small quantities and are easily exhausted, which occurs throughout the state. Revenue collector, Jesus Contreras Gómez, minimized the problem and said that when one batch is distributed, another arrives.
He said that last year ended with 6,700 vehicles in the registry, between cars, private and rental motorcycles, golf carts, pickup trucks and taxis, but this steadily increases as the months go by, so he estimated that by the month Of December the number could reach about nine thousand vehicles.
At the end of 2016, the registry included 1,800 private motorcycles and 450 rental motorcycles, and by December this is expected to reach 2500 motorcycles. Mr. Contreras Gómez said that one of the factors that contributes to the increase in the number of motorcycles is the fact that it is easy to buy one, both new and used, and many people are opting for the second option. This year the process of change of owner was free and many began to update their registration, and there were even cases of people who had never paid.
Regarding taxis, last year ended with 965 vehicles including "combis" and specialized tourism service vehicles. By the month of May, this number grew to 1100 vehicles.
As for the golf carts, the official said that there are more than 800 rental units, active and plated, plus the carts that are owned by private individuals. Mr. Contreras was asked about the new rental owners who are not yet in operation and how many carts will be added, but he said only SINTRA could know the answer to that question.

Due to increasing winds, at 10:30am the port was closed for boats under 40 feet, including nautical activities in the bay such as tours to El Farito. This affected some 600 smaller tourist, fishing and private vessels. Overnight tourism has dropped dramatically during this slow season, and the daytime visitors seem to be tight budgets, especially those staying at all inclusive hotels. The golf cart rental agencies continue to do well, renting 75 to 90% of their inventory.

The staff of the Department of the Navy (SEMAR) are ready to take over responsibility for all the ports in the country on June 17th. Naval personnel have painted the building and access has been restricted to the Port Authority dock. The taco stand there has been closed, to the dismay of those who previously had breakfast there. Starting June 17th, the Harbor Masters will no longer report to the SCT (Department of Communications and Transport), and they will be under the authority of the Department of the Navy instead.
Maritime Terminal Men's room closed

The Men's bathroom at the Maritime Terminal has been out of operation for more than a week. Personnel say this is due to remodeling, and they don't know how long this will continue. Passengers must use the facilities at the taxi stand, which aren't free.
