There are an increasing number of abandoned boats in the coastal area near the Whale Shark Monument, on prolongation Rueda Medina, which creates a poor image for tourists. This also causes concerns for those who anchor their boats in the area, who do not want to be included if there is an eviction action. This area is under the control of the Harbor Master and the state Port Authority (APIQRoo) whose director,Alicia Ricalde Magana, had previously said the boats would be evicted, but that has not happened.

Blue Flag for Playa Centro
On June 8 to 10th, Isla Mujeres Alderman Sebastián Escobedo Jiménez and the general director of ZOFEMAT for the island, Vladimir Vallejo Molina, attended the 12th National Meeting of Clean Beaches in Riviera Nayarit, where PRONATURA presented the Blue Flag award to Playa Centro. This was accomplished by coordinated work between different governmental agencies to meet each of the requirements for certification, including a number of environmental conditions. This includes control and monitoring of the cleanliness of the sand, quality of the water, limiting vendors, ensuring free access, and providing security for the visitors. The Mayor explained there are several people responsible for maintaining the beach in optimal condition.

Local families and visitors were delighted by the special edition of Noches Magicas of Isla Mujeres on Sunday Night by the Senior Citizen's club, featuring songs by Mexican composers and dances inspired by the island. The Director of the Institute of Culture and Arts, Ruben Perez Martin, gave recognition to the participating members, thanking them for their dedication and commitment to sharing and spreading our traditions.

'Paki', the dolphin rescued in Isla Mujeres will return to the sea on June 20th
-http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/paki-el-delfin-rescatado-en-isla-mujeres-regresara-al-mar-el-proximo-20-de-junio/
After recovering from a severe infection that kept him on the verge of death, the animal will now return to the sea.
The Federal Attorney General's Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has given the go-ahead for the release of the dolphin "Paki" on June 20th, who was rescued from the beaches of the Caribbean Sea on Isla Mujeres on May 2nd.
Roberto Sánchez Okrucry, head of veterinarians at Dolphin Discovery, explained that the recovery of the dolphin was slow but very good. The animal was rescued from a rocky coastal area of the Caribbean Sea, below the cliffs of Isla Mujeres. With the help of volunteers, the animal didn't die, and after a strong dose of antibiotics, was able to fight the infection that nearly took his life. In addition to being very sick, he had lost a great deal of weight and did not want to eat at first.
Dolphin Discovery said they expect to hold an event at their facility, and then to move the dolphin to a safe area where he will be returned to the sea. It is noted that this is not the first release of this type, and last April, 2016, the dolphin "Maya" was released with a tracking device, which indicated part of her 'route' extended to Honduras.

Looking for taxi driver for alleged abuse against a tourist-
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/buscan-a-taxista-por-presunto-abuso-en-contra-de-una-turista/
June 12  A foreign tourist posted allegations on social networks yesterday that she passed out in a taxi on Saturday night after drinking alcohol, and awoke with the drivers hands between her legs. She said she didn't realize what had happened until she had arrived home, and then she went with a friend to the Police Station to complain. She shared the information on social networks, saying she was upset with the lack of response from the police.
This has gotten the attention of the authorities, and the tourism office confirmed on Monday afternoon that the woman is expected to start reviewing files from the Taxi Union, to see if she can identify a photograph of the driver.
As of today (June 12) no complaint had been filed against any taxistas. The Secretary of Labor and Conflicts of the Isla Mujeres Taxi Union, Sergio Castillo Pacheco, said that they began an investigation yesterday when the complaint was posted in social networks, but it has been impossible to clarify the facts of the case since the woman has not come to the union to give information about the driver or the number of the taxi.
He explained, "We don't know where she entered the taxi, nor the number of the car or a description of the driver, which prevents us from locating the alleged person who is responsible." He said they are coordinating their investigation with the police but do not know of the existence of a complaint being filed.

Applicants for new whale shark permits could be left out
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/aspirantes-de-nuevo-ingres…/
Although CONANP (National Commission for Protected Natural Areas) has said that only 20 percent of the applications remain to be reviewed, many of the boat owners are afraid that those who are newcomers will be rejected.
They say if they had been aware that the possibilities were slim for obtaining a permit, they probably wouldn't have gotten involved and invested so much money. One said, "Many of us had to borrow money, buy a boat, adapt it, and buy engines, so that now they tell us we will not be given permits."
CONANP made a commitment to complete the review of applications for permits that were not released, with a deadline of June 15th. Recently, at one of the docks an inspection was made of the boats, where the boaters were continuing to express their concerns about this issue.

Streets of island crowded with golf carts
Atestadas con carritos de golf las calles de la isla [+] Ver masFull article at this link
In the ten years from 2006 to 2016, the number of golf carts grew exponentially, when ex-governor Joaquin Hendricks left office with 185 authorized, ex-governor Felix Gonzalez raised the number to 443, and with ex-governor Borge, the total increased to 873 golf carts.
In 2016, in August and September, former Governor Borge, who is now imprisoned in Panama, released 180 new plates, including the following: Juan Pablo Linss de la Peña, of the company Majube Group, S. A de C.V, was authorized to have plates for 20 carts on September 5, 2016; Lucía Guadalupe Rivas Aguilar, with the company Adventures Rent, S. A of C. V., for 30 plates, on August 22; and Patricia del Socorro Soberanis Port, Southeastern Land Transfers, S. A de C. V., also with 30 plates, on August 9. It is noted that these companies are not yet operating, but they can do so at any time. Por Esto previously published names of politicians whose friends and family members rent golf carts, including former mayors and councilmen Hugo Sánchez and Agapito Magaña, Paulino Adame, Jesus Contreras, Jorge Cárdenas, Alicia Ricalde.
The taxi drivers complain that the street have become increasingly crowded from this source of competition. The island representative for SINTRA (Department of Infrastructure and Transport), Jorge Martin, made a campaign promise to reduce the number and cancel the last authorizations made by former Gov. Borge.

June 11  Small boats were restricted to port on Sunday which was expected to continue on Monday. Last night it rained harder that previous days, and staff with Civil Protection were mobilized to prevent flooding in the downtown area, and they removed branches that fell onto a sidewalk in colonia La Gloria. Business was better on Sunday for the boat tours in the Bay, with almost none going out on Saturday. They expect business to improve on Monday when vacations begin and some of the colleges around Mexico, and families may be visiting next weekend.

-     Mexican actor and singer Alan is touring Mexican Caribbean attractions with a view to attracting visitors for the upcoming summer season, and this weekend he arrived in Isla Mujeres. The tour is sponsored by Best Day travel agency. The singer-actor was a member of Magnets and his real name is Erick Ibarra Miramontes. He was in Holbox on June 7, then in Isla Mujeres and he will be in Cancun from the 14th to 20th. He transmits live from each place. He shared images from the Maritime Terminal, and announced he will feature images of the beaches, Punta Sur, MUSA, Cross of the Bay, the Tortugranja, and lodging choices.
Although Isla Mujeres receives more visitors each year, but this does not mean that the hotels are always full, because the majority are day-visitors. Therefore a promotion of this type means a lot to the hoteliers.
