The Sol al Sol Regatta has continued uninterrupted for 49 years, and serves to strengthen ties between the two neighboring nations of the US and Mexico, and between the two important beach destinations of St Petersburg and Isla Mujeres.

Efficient trash collection service in Isla Mujeres

The trash collection trucks cover 14 routes in the Continental Zone and six on the island, seven days a week, in the morning, afternoon, and night to keep the streets clean and to avoid accumulations of trash. New trash trucks were delivered in April and efforts have been increased and services have been improved, in order to remove the increasing amounts of trash promptly and efficiently. Credit is given to Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis to his commitment to continuing to provide improved public services to the island community.

Rescued dolphin refuses to eat, and efforts continue to save him
- http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/delfin-rescatado-se-niega-…/

May 3, Wednesday.... Edgar Urbina Zanldivar, director of Animal Care and Marine Mammal Specialists at Grupo Dolphin Discovery, explained that the veterinary team is working with the small dolphin, which had a dehydration condition. He said that the dolphin seems to be responding favorably to the antibiotics that were supplied to him since yesterday. He explained that they took blood samples to determine any problems he may have, since it is believed he may have an infection because there is a bad smell in his mouth. The Director said that at this time the animal is behaving normally, and breathing normally. They expected to have the results of the medical tests that afternoon and then they could have a clearer diagnosis about the state of the animal's health. The young dolphin is underweight, which suggests he may be sick.
He is dehydrated, so they have been hydrating him and administering antibiotics since Tuesday, and now they were waiting for the results from the laboratory. They continue working to hydrate him, to prevent further weight loss, and the young animal refuses to eat.

It could be observed that the traditional cross was raised at various construction sites in honor of this day, which represents the gratitude of the construction workers for this work that gives sustenance to their families, and they ask for protection from the many risks they take in performing their jobs. Many were given the day off at 1pm, and it is traditional for bosses and union leader to provide refreshments and festivities.

Tourist dies after snorkeling at Los Manchones
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/fallece-turista-despues-de…/
A sixty-five year old Mexican tourist died after snorkeling in the area known at "Manchones". He had said that he felt fatigued when he climbed aboard the catamaran, after snorkeling, and then he appeared to have a heart attack or respiratory complication.
He was immediately given first aid by the other tourists, including mouth to mouth resuscitation, but when they arrived to the Lancheros beach, he had already passed away. They waited for the Red Cross paramedics, but nothing could be done, because he had no vital signs. He had been aboard the catamaran "Mar y Arena", from Puerto Juarez, with the company "Sail Away", whose captain described what happened.
At the Lancheros beach, municipal police officers and personnel with the Harbor Master's office cordoned off the area, and they waited for the officials from the Public Ministry to arrive, who were in transit from Cancun. It was after noon when they were still waiting for the officials and for relatives of the tourist, who apparently reside in Playa del Carmen.

Forgotten on their day
Olvidados en su día .. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
There was a lack of celebrations for the construction workers on their day (Dia de Santa Cruz), and a tour of Sac Bajo and Punta Sur construction sites revealed they were working at noon. An electrician named Jose, working on condos in Sac Bajo said he and his coworkers were given half of the day off on Wednesday, that they were given no recognition. He is from Chiapas, and complained that their salaries are not enough to meet basic expenses, with specialists making 3000 pesos a week, while the assistants earning the lowest pay receive 1700 pesos weekly, and they lack benefits.
It is noted that there is also a problem of alcoholism among the workforce, which prevents some of their already low wages from making it home.
It is also noted that there are plans for thousands of hotel rooms to be built in the mainland area of Punta Sam and Isla Blanca, where there are already about 3000 rooms.
It is also noted that the unions have not had a parade/march for Labor Day the past three years.

Mexican tourist dies

This has the same information as the article translated above, noting that the man appeared to have died from natural causes, was named Mario Antonion C., 67, apparently had heart disease, and had problems after a lot of exercise from the activity of snorkeling. The crew acted quickly to help, when he began to feel badly. He is from Guadalajara, Jalisco and was visiting with his family for the day, from Cancun, and they had hired a tour service to experience the island. There were no vital signs when the paramedics arrived at 12:24p. The area was cordoned off and his body was kept in the boat until the MP officials arrived, and then was transferred to the SEMEFO (Forensic Medical Service) in Cancun.

Rescued dolphin being treated for infection

May 3 This article has the same information as the article translated above regarding the rescued dolphin being treated at the Tortugranja.
It notes that this is the third dolphin rescued since 2015. Rosy Cerrillos, manager of marine mammal specialists at Dolphin Discovery, recalled that on March 31, 2015, a dolphin later named "Maya, was rescued from the Cancun Hotel Zone and recovered from a kidney stone disease after four weeks of medical care at their facilities in Sac Bajo. She was released at Punta Sur of Isla Mueres, after a satellite device was installed, which disintegrated after three months. She was fully restored in her habitat, with a history of traveling in the vicinity of the island and out into the nearby Caribbean sea.
Last year, they tried to restore the health of another dolphin that arrived to the coast of the island badly wounded. Its situation was medically complicated, and unfortunately it passed away shortly thereafter.
There is a good prognosis for the current dolphin to be restored to health and the specialists are working their hardest toward this goal, said Eduardo Albor Villanueva, of Dolphin Discovery.

Animal protection regulations in Isla Mujeres
Buscan el bienestar animal en Isla Mujeres.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The Animal Protection and Welfare Regulations of Isla Mujeres became official when they were published two weeks ago in the Official Publication of the Quintana Roo (Periódico Oficial de Quintana Roo). The municipal Director of Ecology, Jose González, said this represents an advance for animal welfare in Isla Mujeres and he is ready to implement them immediately for the second half of 2017.
The official said work is being done to develop a pet registration project, and he estimates that 95 percent of the dogs in the streets have owners. He explained that these regulations mean progress, because once the law can be applied, then this sector can be controlled. However, the problem is more complicated regarding the cats, because are many more feral cats than stray dogs.
He said there will be a campaign to raise awareness and then the regulation will be applied. It will be enforced so that dog owners take their pets out for walks on a leash and carry bags to remove their feces.
He has been one of the promoters for animal care in Isla Mujeres for the past five years. He  has participated in the dissemination and promotion of the Animal Welfare Law of Quintana Roo, working with a civil association. He understands the problem and has worked in cooperation with others in the community, including  the veterinarian Delfino Guevara, who has been an enthusiastic collaborator in the plan for two decades.
He explained that this legislation was approved earlier this year, and became official when it was published on April 18th.
