Regaining sand
Recuperan tramo de arenal [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Two wooden breakwaters were installed by a North Beach concessionaire in the past three months, resulting in the recovery of about 15 meters of sand in an area that had eroded, taking advantage of the south-southeasterly winds of this season. These winds cause the surplus sand of Playa Centro to move toward Playa Norte, which is why the navigation channel became affected in April. The surplus sand of Playa Centro reached the buoy line, with the south winds, was transferred north, and for this reason beach was recovered in the area known as "Playa Sol".
This change caused by the two wooden breakwaters now allow a line of umbrellas and they want to recover the area of nearly 10,000 square meters that was once Playa Sol, according to an employee who was working at installing temporary shelters.
There has been no official announcement concerning the proposals for a project to renovate or replace the geotubes. It was noted on Thursday that the buoy line for Playa Centro is now fully free. Recently the buoy line that was stuck on the sand, after had been at the edge of the navigation area, due to the shifting sands. That was causing a risk to swimmers who were in the area where boats pass, but the southern winds have moved the surplus sand to the north, and the buoys are no longer resting on the beach.

Tomorrow morning swimmers from all over the world will participate in the annual "Nado por la Libre" swim between Cancun & Isla Mujeres. It is said to be one of the most important Open Water swimming events in the world. Those swimming the 9.5k from the mainland will start at 7:30a and the others will depart from an anchored ship at 8:10a to swim 3k.
This event began in Isla Mujeres in 1980 as part of the celebrations for Navy Day (June 1), with 30 competitors swimming between North Beach and a buoy for a total of 3km.
In the 90's, they began swimming from Puerto Juarez to North Beach, and the competition expanded to 50 participants, and a 10k run was added along the Isla Mujeres coast. The event continued to be held on June 1 to celebrate Navy Day.
In the early 2000's the event developed and two swims to the island were held, with the first from Puerto Juarez to North Beach and the second a month later from Punta Nizuc to Garrafon.
In 2005, the crossing to Isla Mujeres was named "Por la Libre", and this year they have begun calling it "El Cruce". Its route crosses MUSA, and it promotes the preservation & appreciation of the Underwater Museum, and of the local ecology and culture, as well as the sport of open water swimming.
It is considered the most beautiful open water event in Mexico, and attracts participants aged 10 to 70+ from all over the world. There were 230 swimmers in 2008, 380 in 2009, 600 in 2010, 780 in 2011, 750 in 2014 and 800 in 2016.
